Fitness for the Trails™: What’s Inside

Fully train body and mind for your bucket list hikes in 6-weeks.

Our comprehensive training program is designed to help you:

  • Save time and worry with our weekly schedule of workouts
  • Get results and stay safe with 6-weeks of progressive fitness programming
  • Connect with nature with weekly outdoor cardio workouts, hikes and walks
  • Develop muscular and cardiovascular strength and endurance
  • Improve flexibility and joint mobility through targeted movements

Building Blocks of the Training Program

Our comprehensive hiking and backpacking training program includes 6-weeks of workouts built upon the foundational four pillars of movement and mindfulness:

1. Muscular Strength and Endurance

Each resistance training session is designed to develop strength and endurance with common weight and resistance equipment including dumbbells and barbells.

2. Cardiovascular Strength and Endurance

Train your heart and nervous system where they were meant to thrive–outside, in nature. Enjoy the added bonuses of mental clarity and awe by unplugging.

3. Joint Mobility and Muscular Flexibility

Challenging movements and yoga poses prepare you for the rigors of outdoor life – such as going to the bathroom, setting up a tent, and preventing a fall.

4. Rest and Recovery

Recovery is one of the most important components of any training program, and is built into Fitness for the Trails™. “Recovery is a grit skill. Train at recovery.”

It’s time to start training now for your bucket list hiking and backpacking trips!

As a traveler myself, I’ve gone on trips that I wasn’t physically prepared for and been injured. Once I “came off the couch” to go rappelling with my expert canyoneering friends near Zion National Park. I wound up suspended in a waterfall with 200 feet of heavy wet rope hanging from my climbing harness – and pulled an oblique muscle (that’s an abdominal) trying to do a wet release into a thigh-deep pool of water. I felt that one for the next 2 months!

What I’d like you to know is that I have been there, done that too. I’ve learned that when I invest the time to fully prepare myself physically and mentally for the journey ahead – my epic adventures are a lot more fun

I’ve invested nearly 3 decades into understanding how the human body responds to exercise and sharing my love and enjoyment of adventure with my clients, readers, and community. Now, with the input of fitness and yoga instructor Tedi Searle, we’ve designed a hiking and backpacking training program to help you be as fit as possible for your trip of a lifetime.

Who’s a Great Fit for Fitness for the Trails™?

Group of people hiking along a trail with backpacks and gear, a rugged mountain ridge in the background.

Fitness for the Trails™ is for you if:

  • You’ve committed to a bucket list hiking or backpacking trip (and you want to be physically and mentally prepared).
  • You’re busy doing All. The. Things (and don’t have time to waste researching boring hiking blogs and travelogs).
  • You’re a first time or experienced hiker and backpacker (who is planning to complete a challenging hike or adventure within the next 3 months).
  • You’re a new outdoor enthusiast and active adventurer or traveler (who wants to up your fitness game with 36 strength, cardiovascular, flexibility and mobility workouts).
  • You are a traveler embarking on a self-guided or professionally guided trek (who want tried and true, evidence-based, expert-led, on-demand workouts)

My wish is that anyone who participates in this 6-week training program for hiking and backpacking gains on-demand access to an evidence-based cardio, strength, mobility and flexibility training program that is organized with actionable steps that prepare you mentally and physically for your trek. With that in mind, I know it’s not a perfect fit for everyone.

This program is not for you if:

  • If you think you are already mentally and physically prepared for your hiking trip.
  • Your trip is less than 5 weeks away. Fitness for the Trails™ is a progressive training program that increases in intensity over time, and we want you to progress safely.

Adventure Awaits: Prepare for Your Bucket List Hikes and Expect the Extraordinary!

Get ready for a transformation story! One of my most thrilling training tales involves a 50-year-old dynamo, a wife to a high-flying venture capitalist and a mom of two little daredevils. Picture this: She’s not your typical fitness enthusiast, yet here she is, gearing up for a jaw-dropping 10-day trek–to the mighty Mount Kilimanjaro!

With the clock ticking just 7 weeks away from this epic adventure, she’s knee-deep in home renovations and juggling her boys’ school and sports schedules. The twist? She hasn’t spared a moment for her own training! That’s when her husband brought me onto the team. I curated a customized fitness program featuring strength training and challenging outdoor excursions, from local Santa Ynez mountain hikes to an epic trek up the 14,000 ft White Mountain Peak in the Eastern Sierra, California, U.S.A.

But that’s not where the excitement ends. I personally shopped top-of-the-line gear for her Kilimanjaro expedition and cranked up the fun with a family camping trip in the John Muir Woods. What started as a daunting backpacking challenge blossomed into a bonding family adventure, filled with confidence and memories that will last for years to come.
